Phil Sanger

MEng

Associate

Higher education

Phil Sanger graduated with an MEng from the University of Bath in 1997.  This was a five year thick sandwich degree including a year in industry as the third year. Phil spent the first two years of his degree studying a wide range of subjects including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics and control systems. Following a year in industry working for Rolls-Royce plc, Phil spent the final two years specialising in computer aided engineering and biomechanical engineering. Subjects read included finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, biomechanics, biomaterials and life support engineering.

Two major projects were undertaken during the degree; a group business and design project based around food packaging technology and a final year research project concerning the computational modelling of a human tooth in order to ascertain the causes of a known dental condition. The results of the latter project have been presented at international level.

Phil graduated in 2002 with 1st class honours and was awarded the Institute of Mechanical Engineers' Frederic Barnes Waldron prize for 'best student'.

Career to date

Phil spent a year during his degree working for the defence arm of Rolls-Royce plc. in Bristol, using computer aided engineering to predict the effects of cooling systems on military gas turbine engines.

Following graduation, Phil joined the Arup Vehicle Design Group in Solihull, taking on a roll as a consultant engineer, using computer aided engineering techniques to help a wide range of clients in their design processes. This culminated in a thirteen-month secondment to Detroit, whereby Phil worked on a major new US vehicle development program as part of a multi-disciplinary, multinational design team. Phil has also undertaken a secondment at a surgical equipment manufacturer in the Midlands.

Phil joined Withers and Rogers' as a trainee patent attorney in 2005, and works primarily for Dave Croston. He is based in the Midlands office and became part-qualified in 2007. He was awarded the Nicholas Wilson Memorial Award for the highest mark in the 2006 Design & Copyright paper.

Personal Skills

Phil has broad engineering experience, both academic and commercial. He has worked in a wide range of organisations, and his experience as a consultant engineer gives him the ability to analyse engineering problems and solutions quickly and effectively.

Sector Experience

Automotive (particularly crashworthiness), biomechanical engineering, aerospace (particularly gas turbines).

On a personal note...

Phil enjoys cooking, after spending several university holidays working as a junior chef at the Assembly Rooms in Bath, and spends a lot of his free time in the kitchen. He also enjoys reading, and has a passion for literature old and new alike.
