Joanna Westwood

Joanna read chemistry at the University of Exeter and obtained the highest overall marks in the final year examinations. She was awarded a Ph.D. in co-ordination chemistry from the same university for her research into metallocene-based sensors for barbiturate compounds. Joanna also authored a number of scientific papers during this time.

Career to date

Having entered the profession in 2002, Joanna trained in the chemical team of a private practice firm and qualified as both a European and UK Patent Attorney in 2005. Joanna moved to Withers & Rogers in 2008 and specialises in the handling of general chemical, pharmaceutical, healthcare and mechanical inventions.

Personal Skills

Joanna is an efficient, approachable attorney with a client-focused attitude. She regards it as particularly important to offer clear advice which considers and addresses the commercial needs of the client.

Sector Experience

Joanna is a general chemist and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. She handles a wide range of work in the chemical field. She has particular expertise in the area of formulation chemistry having worked extensively with clients in the FMCG industries. Joanna also has experience in the preparation and registration of assignments and a keen interest in licensing matters (she is a member of the Licensing Executive Society). She also handles oppositions and appeals before the European Patent Office, regularly undertaking advocacy in this forum.

Client Experience

Joanna works closely with David Bannerman and advises with both small and large local clients, overseas clients and overseas attorneys. Her portfolio includes applications for Kao Corporation, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Chisso Corporation, Arch Group and Mallinckrodt Inc., part of Covidien (formerly Tyco Healthcare).

Notable Successes

During her training Joanna won the Moss Prize for passing the foundation level patent examination papers with the highest aggregate mark in the 2002 examinations and the Strode Prize for passing the Patent Agents’ Practice examination paper with the highest marks in the 2004 UK qualifying examinations.

Joanna has successfully revoked a number of patents in appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office.

On a personal note...

Joanna spends her spare time indulging her passions for yoga, textiles and science fiction. Other interests include swimming, rugby (purely as a spectator sport), and taking long gentle strolls on a Sunday.
